Apple stew – iPhone 4 doesn’t work – my money is on Apple not really caring #Apple #iphone4
I have been an Apple user (and a bit of a fan) for some twenty years. But this is not some sycophantic gush.
Everyone is very cross with Apple. Phone calls on the new iPhone 4 cut out half way through because the antenna is a band of metal wrapped round the outer of the device (or some such) and, particularly if you hold the phone in your left hand, means phone calls cut out, at least for some people. The solution is or isn’t wrapping a fancy rubber band round the phone, depending on who you believe – Apple will give you one for free if you ask – personally I think this is less of a solution and more of a ‘anything to shut you up’ move.
Meanwhile everyone is waiting for Apple to start apologising and spending $1.8Billion recalling and replacing/repairing. But I will have a bet with anyone that this won’t happen.
In my experience you always wait for the third iteration of new Apple products. The first version will have a problem, the second version will solve the problem and the third version will be what they should have launched in the first place. They are arrogant and won’t particularly care if anyone gets upset. They do what they do as part of their own vision – not yours (see Steve Jobs email exchange)
Why am I a fan? When they get it right they get it spectacularly right.
So, if you are going to get an iPhone 4, do it in about a year’s time on an updated hardware platform with the antenna problem fixed and iPhone 4.2 or 4.3 software …and not a rubber band in sight.
